Medical cannabis is legal in Kentucky right now — but only if you hold a state registry ID card. Here is exactly how to get one, straight from the state’s own patient guide.
STEP 1: MAKE SURE YOU QUALIFY
You must have one of Kentucky’s qualifying medical conditions: cancer, chronic, severe, or intractable pain, epilepsy or seizure disorders, multiple sclerosis or muscle spasticity, debilitating cyclic nausea or vomiting, or PTSD. You also need to be a Kentucky resident without a disqualifying felony conviction. Minors can qualify with a parent or guardian’s consent and a designated caregiver.
STEP 2: SEE AN AUTHORIZED PRACTITIONER
Only practitioners authorized by the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure or Board of Nursing — and registered with the Office of Medical Cannabis — can certify you. Your first visit must be in person so the practitioner can establish a real patient relationship, confirm your diagnosis, and review your prescription history. If you qualify, they submit your written certification electronically within 24 hours. The state keeps a directory of authorized practitioners at kymedcan.ky.gov.
KCFC sponsor Kentucky Marijuana Card helps Kentucky patients through the certification process — visit their website at https://www.kentuckymarijuanacard.com to learn more.
STEP 3: APPLY THROUGH THE STATE PORTAL
With your certification in hand, apply through the Cabinet’s online Patient and Caregiver Registration Portal. You will submit your identifying information, documentation, and a $25 nonrefundable application fee, payable by credit card or eCheck.
STEP 4: GET YOUR CARD AND SHOP LEGALLY
The state reviews your application and issues your registry ID card — approved patients receive their digital license within about five days of approval. Bring your registry card and a government-issued photo ID to any licensed Kentucky dispensary. Cards are valid for one year and must be renewed annually.
WHAT YOU CAN BUY — AND THE RULES
Licensed dispensaries sell edibles, oils, tinctures, vapes, topicals, and raw flower, and patients may purchase up to a 30-day supply at a time. Know the limits: no home growing — cultivation remains illegal. Recreational cannabis is still illegal, and possession without a card is still a crime. Public consumption is prohibited, and vaping is restricted to adults 21 and older.
WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS
Only registry ID cards issued by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Office of Medical Cannabis, are valid. No website or clinic can sell you a state card directly — if someone claims they can, walk away. The legitimate process runs through kymedcan.ky.gov.
WHY WE ARE STILL FIGHTING
The medical program helps patients — but it does nothing for the more than 300,000 Kentuckians who were charged with cannabis offenses over the last twenty years, and nothing for adults who use cannabis responsibly but do not have a qualifying condition. That is why our bill would decriminalize possession of up to one ounce and five plants for every adult 21 and older.
If you qualify, get your card. And sign the petition at change.org/LetKentuckyVote so every Kentuckian gets relief — not just cardholders.
